On Saturday, July 8, 2017, a record number of friends and family members packed into Metcalf Hall in the BU Student Union at 4 p.m. to watch the members of the DMD Class of 2019 and DMD Advanced Standing (AS) Class of 2018 participate in the annual White Coat Ceremony, which marks the midway point of the dental students’ education and celebrates their transition from the classroom to the Patient Treatment Center.
After all the 860 students and attendees had taken their seats in Metcalf Hall, the White Coat Ceremony began with a welcome from Assistant Dean of Students Dr. Joseph Calabrese, followed by opening remarks from Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter.
Although they (our students) have had the opportunity of treating patients since they began their dental education, they are about to begin the very important phase of their education in which they manage their own patients and provide comprehensive oral healthcare to them,” said Dean Hutter.
The keynote address followed Dean Hutter’s remarks and it was delivered by Dr. Joseph P. Crowley, President-elect of the American Dental Association (ADA). After the keynote address, the two classes were presented to Dean Hutter by Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Dr. Cataldo Leone to signify the beginning of the ceremony.
The students approached the stage four-at-a-time to don their white coats, signifying an important transition in their educational and dental careers. While Dr. Stephen Dulong announced their names, Dr. Joseph Calabrese, Dr. John Guarente, Dr. Celeste Kong, Dr. Cataldo Leone, and Dr. Janet Peters assisted the students in donning their coats. Dr. Tina Valades and Dr. Matthew Zwieg served as Marshalls for the Ceremony. When all the students had their coats on and had returned to their seats, Dean Hutter sked them to stand as he led the DMD Class of 2019 and DMD AS Class of 2018 in reciting the Professional Oath.
Several students were then recognized with awards. The recipients of the Spencer N. Frankl Scholarships, American Dental Association (ADA) Foundation Scholarship, and Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dr. William S. Kramer Award of Excellence were announced.
The Spencer N. Frankl Scholarships were awarded to Safina-Aliya Dhanji DMD 19, Brian Nadeau DMD 19, Katelyn Quan DMD 19, and Elaine Wu DMD 19, while the American Dental Association Foundation Scholarships were presented to Erica Janik DMD 19 and Charmi Shah DMD 19.
Lastly, the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dr. William S. Kramer Award of Excellence was presented to Zachary Fried DMD 19 by Dean Hutter and Dr. Crowley
Dean Hutter closed the ceremony with a few more remarks to the students and their families and friends.
“Members of the Doctor of Dental Medicine Class of 2019 and the Doctor of Dental Medicine Advanced Standing Class of 2018, we value your experience and we are certainly very fortunate to have you as students,” he said. “You are the best and the brightest and I know that I speak for the entire faculty and staff when I say that we feel privileged and deeply gratified that you made the decision and, it was the correct one, to attend our Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine.“
All of the DMD 19 and DMD AS 18 students, now that they officially have their white coats, will be tasked with managing the comprehensive oral healthcare of their patients, while providing them with needed treatment in the Predoctoral Patient Treatment Centers of GSDM.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the Ziskind Lounge.
Before the ceremony began, students, families, and friends were also invited to participate in special tours of GSDM conducted by: Jaime Waller DMD 18, Megan Sullivan DMD 18, Scott Jegard DMD 18, Valerie LaScala DMD 18, Nobiru Suzuki DMD 18, Luis Perez DMD 18, Amanda Alon DMD 18, Sasha Manchanda DMD 18, Sloane Kaminski-Ditzel DMD 18, Selena Francis DMD 18, Victoria Mitic DMD 18, Katherine Moynihan DMD 18, Kyle Glass DMD 18, and Alicia Tavares DMD 18. Dean Hutter and Dr. Calabrese greeted and took photos with the students, families, and friends on the front steps of the School prior to the tours.
The Boston Area Health Education Center (BAHEC) held their annual Youth to Health Careers Summer Enrichment Program Health Career Expo on Friday, July 14, 2017 in the Hiebert Lounge. This annual event is aimed at connecting Boston adolescents (9-12 graders) who are interested in exploring health careers with a variety of health professionals representing a broad range of career fields. The Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine was represented by both our Office of Research and Office of Global and Population Health.
The day began when Anthony Crosson, Director of the Boston Area Health Education Center at the Boston Public Health Commission, welcomed all students and healthcare professionals. Following his remarks, Dr. Philomena Assante, Director of the BAHEC Division of Child and Adolescent Health, and Dr. Hee-Young Park, Director of the Graduate Medical Science Program at Boston University School of Medicine, took to the podium to address the audience and discuss future roles in healthcare.
Following the welcoming remarks, students were able to circulate the room to visit various stations and learn more about the various fields of study in healthcare. The three Boston University Medical Campus Schools, School of Medicine, School of Public Health, and the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) were all represented.
The GSDM station was staffed by; Afaf Hourani, Assistant Director of Predoctoral Research; Kendrick Smaellie, Administrative Assistant for the Center for Clinical Research; Kathy Held, Director of the Global Initiatives Program and Assistant Professor in the Department of General Dentistry; and Dee Devlin, Clinical Instructor in the Department of Health Policy and Health Services Research. A fun activity at the GSDM station was the creation of a spider chart, where the students were able to see how potential risk factors for cavities can relate to salivary pH.
The final component of the Expo was a networking session, where students in groups of six met with professionals from all healthcare disciplines to learn more about their respective fields of study and practice.
The Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) is pleased to welcome Dr. Vasiliki Maseli to the Department of General Dentistry, where she will serve as a Clinical Associate. Dr. Maseli began her tenure on June 18, 2017.
In her new role, Dr. Maseli will oversee all facets of student work in clinical settings. She will teach first and second year DMD students in the Simulation Learning Center beginning in September, and is currently instructing our third and fourth year DMD students in the Pre-doctoral Patient Treatment Center.
Dr. Maseli comes to GSDM from the University of New England College of Dental Medicine where she served as a Clinical Assistant Professor. She graduated from the University of Athens School of Dentistry in 2010, then continued her education at the University of Michigan, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Restorative Dentistry in 2014.
Dr. Haitem Naas DMD AS 18 has been named the 2016 honoree of the John W. Stanford New Investigator Award. His research aims ultimately to integrate porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations to the computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing system.
The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs selected Dr. Haitem Naas for the award in recognition of his research project titled “Effect of Surface Treatment on Porcelain Bond Strength to Titanium.”
“Results of this study have shown that sandblasting, in combination with gold or titanium nitride coatings as a surface modification for titanium grade V, could make it a suitable substructure material for the porcelain-fused-to-metal restoration,” said Dr. Naas, who added that the inexpensive metal with “remarkable biocompatibility” is useful because “the CAD/CAM system that we use in dentistry nowadays is a subtractive manufacturing that leads to a significant waste of material making it unfeasible to use noble or high noble alloys to create a restoration by CAD/CAM due to the high cost.”
Dr. Naas has had other successes as a clinical researcher, including developing a new clinical technique related to creating a duplicate for almost any restoration as a backup when needed to avoid the need to redo restorations due to the clinical procedure. The technique was published in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry in 2014.
As a recipient of the Stanford New Investigator Award, Dr. Naas presented his winning project at the ADA Standards Committee on Dental Products annual meeting in San Francisco, California in March.
“Awards do mean a lot more when they come from your elite peers, and from highly prestigious organizations such as the American Dental Association,” Dr. Naas told the ADA News. “I will use this great honor as a reason to look forward towards greater and bigger success.”
The John W. Stanford New Investigator Award honors the contributions of the late Dr. Stanford, who died in February 2011 after a 40-year career with the ADA and is credited with establishing the ADA’s current standards program. The award acknowledges the original research that dental students and new dentists produce in the realm of dental standards.

Now being admitted to the profession of dentistry, I pledge myself to the service of humanity,
my patients, my community, and my profession.
I will use my skills to serve all in need, with openness of spirit and without bias.
The health and well being of my patients will be my first consideration.
I will hold in confidence all that my patients entrust to me.
I will not subordinate the dignity of any person to monetary, scientific, or political ends.
I recognize that I have responsibilities to my community to promote its welfare and to
speak out against injustice.
The high regard of my profession is born of society’s trust in its practitioners; I will strive to merit that trust.
I will conduct myself with the highest ethical and professional behavior in the classroom, the clinic, and in all areas of my life.
I will promote the integrity of the profession with honest and respectful relations with other health professionals.
I will strive to advance my profession by seeking new knowledge and by re-examining the idea and practices of the past.
I assume these responsibilities knowing that their fulfillment relies on my own good health.
I ask that my colleagues be attentive to my well-being, as I will be to theirs.
I will seek to improve my practice by maintaining my skills and addressing my mistakes.
I take this oath freely and upon my honor.
In closing, Dean Hutter added, “Whether you choose patient care, research, education, or health policy as a focus in your career, as a graduate of the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine you will be well prepared to meet the challenges that lie before you.”
Following the closing remarks, the students were led out of the tent by Dean Hutter, Associate Provost Moore and the members of the Official Party.

This year, Dean and Mrs. Jeffrey W. Hutter started a new end-of-summer tradition at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) – a hot dog barbecue! On Monday, August 28, 2017, students, residents, faculty, and staff from the entire GSDM community convened on the patio outside 100 East Newton Street to enjoy a traditional hot dog barbecue on what turned out to be a perfect summer day.
Chequers Café at the Boston Medical Center catered the event. All of the traditional fixings for a gourmet dog were available; onions, relish, cheese, chili, sauerkraut, ketchup, and mustard. In addition to the hot dogs, black bean veggie burgers were also available for our vegetarian and vegan patrons.
“Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first end of summer barbecue,” said Dean Hutter. “Mrs. Hutter and I very much enjoyed hosting everyone, and look forward to continuing this tradition next year as we show our appreciation to the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine community for all their hard work and support.”

Dr. Alaa Qari, DScD candidate in Dental Public Health at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM), was selected as one of the 1000 global talents from 129 countries to participate in UNLEASH, a fully-sponsored innovation laboratory that took place in August 2017 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
UNLEASH was an immersive experience designed to have participants co-create innovative, implementable, and scalable solutions to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Dr. Qari was one of three dentists invited to attend the program and focused her efforts on designing an innovative solution to address the third UN SDG, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages.
Over the nine-day challenge, Dr. Qari’s team tackled the mothers and families subtheme – specifically addressing lack of access to emergency care for women who experience pregnancy complications due to difficulty in reaching proper health facilities in Sub-Saharan Africa. Their solution is to leverage big data to optimize health resource deployment to maximize coverage of pregnant women.
After designing the intervention and fine-tuning the product with Deloitte facilitators, the prototype was tested in the community, and then pitched to fellow competitors and potential investors. UNLEASH is preparing a project catalog for distribution to investors, companies, mentors, and others in UNLEASH’s network who are interested in helping competitors move their solutions forward.
Dentsply Sirona held their annual World Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada from September 14-16, 2017. Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) faculty members Drs. Neal Fleisher, Hesham Nouh and Alexander Bendayan presented at the World Meeting. Primarily, their presentation focused on the curriculum changes implemented into both predoctoral and postdoctoral programs to incorporate guided surgery into the curriculum using digital workflows at GSDM.
Drs. Fleisher and Nouh presented the details of the predoctoral Implantology laboratory simulation to predoctoral students, and how it seamlessly integrated into the Patient Treatment Centers where students place dental implants with the supervision of faculty members. Dr. Alexander Bendayan presented the different workflows needed when planning more complex surgical guides used in the Postgraduate Patient Treatment Centers.
Dr. Louis Brown presented together with Dr. Robert Douglas on “Technology in Dental Education,” highlighting the benefits of Evaluation Software on Saturday, September 16th. He has successfully integrated Prep Check in the GSDM predoctoral curriculum during the simulations in fixed prosthodontics. On this subject, he has also presented multiple posters at various organization’s meetings.
During the same meeting, an alumni reception was hosted by Dr. Bendayan on Friday, September 15, 2017 from 6-9 p.m. at Mercato Della Pescheria located in the Palazzo-Venetian Hotel. The event attracted many GSDM alumni who were attending the meeting. Dr. Bendayan gave recognition to all the faculty at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine that have worked hard to establish and advance Digital Dentistry in our School. He also updated the attendees of the plans and ongoing progress with the renovation and expansion project, set to commence in January 2018.
The next Dentsply Sirona World Meeting will be held in Orlando, Florida from September 13 – 15, 2018 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort.

On Wednesday, October 4, 2017, Mr. Thomas Santacroce DMD 18 presented the first Grand Rounds Presentation of the academic year in classroom G-301 at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. The event was presented by Dean Hutter and Drs. Celeste Kong, Carl McManama, and Cataldo Leone, with Dr. McManama moderating the presentation.
Mr. Santacroce completed his externship rotation at Boston Medical Center, in the Center’s Yawkey Building, where he worked with Dr. Husam Batal and Dr. Eyad Haidar. For his presentation, Mr. Santacroce presented a case that called for multi-staged implant placement at #8 and #9 sites. The 31-year-old male patient presented with significant facial trauma and an unstable alveolar bone following a serious bicycle accident. The accident had resulted in a complete root fracture of tooth #9 and luxation trauma to tooth #8. Immediately following the accident, the patient had some restorative work done in the form of a composite repair of an incisal fracture of tooth #8 and an essix for #9. While this was good temporary work, the composite was beginning to stain and the tooth was not going to survive long term.
The patient’s oral health history was excellent, as he had superior oral hygiene, only minor restorative treatments in his youth, and no report of adverse experiences. While the patient had a full-time job and financial stability, his main hurdle in treatment was his limited disposable income for the implants. In crafting the treatment plan, Mr. Santacroce and the team at BMC had to consider his need for good esthetics for his workplace and self-esteem, and also his limited financial resources.
They began with a consult at GSDM with the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery for a CT, full evaluation, FMX, and CBCT. Next, tooth #9 was extracted, with an implant immediately placed (a Nobel Active 4.3 x 13mm). A non-functional temporary was also immediately inserted and tooth #8 was prepared for essix. Following this procedure, the team decided to wait four months for healing and for financial ease for the patient. The next stage called for the extraction of tooth #8, guided bone regeneration with PRGF, and another five-month waiting period.
Stage three was comprised of a second CBCT, uncovering of the graft site, placing the implant in site #8, and a subepithelial CTG. In this same time-period, a cantilever bridge was inserted as a temporary, and the milled PMMA with one engaging ti-base with a metallic strut for support.
Final impressions were then taken of the patient and sent to the lab to get the final crowns for placement. After some issues with the crowns themselves, their final cementation took place on August 7, 2017. The ti-bases were steam-cleaned, the crowns were aligned on the cast to check their final fit, they were cemented in place with Multilink Hybrid Abutment, and the Zr-to-Ti base interface was polished.
Following his presentation, Mr. Santacroce fielded questions from many faculty members and students. Dean Hutter then presented Mr. Santacroce with a certificate for his Grand Rounds Presentation and congratulated him on a job well done.
Dean Hutter and Drs. Hirayama and Kikuchi with the Japanese Dental Group.
On Saturday, September 9, 2017, the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Education (GSDM) hosted a group of 28 dentists from Japan for a half-day continuing education (CE) lecture. The CE course was entitled, “Current State of Dental Education and Digital Dentistry in the U.S.,” and was led by Dr. Hiroshi Hirayama, Clinical Professor and Director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Prosthodontics; Director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Operative Dentistry; Director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Digital Dentistry; and Dr. Ryota Kikuchi, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of General Dentistry and Practice Leader in the Predoctoral Patient Treatment Center.
The visit was broken down into three sections. The day began at 2 p.m. when Dr. Hirayama welcomed the group to Boston and GSDM. He highlighted what the lecture would focus on and introduced his colleague, Dr. Kikuchi. Dr. Kikuchi then lectured for approximately 45 minutes on the state of dental education. He focused on how dental education in the U.S. has evolved, and how the curriculum at GSDM has continued to be on the cutting edge of common practices and standards within the industry.
Following his talk, the group took a brief break for a tour of the School, including Patient Treatment Centers, classrooms, and administrative office space.
Once the tour was completed, Dr. Hirayama again took the podium to discuss digital dentistry, more specifically, digital prosthodontics. As many already know, GSDM is on the forefront in terms of the implementation of digital dentistry within our school and was the first dental school in the country to go “fully digital”.
Once both speakers had finished their lectures, Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter was on hand to present each attendee with a certificate signifying their completion of the course. The next day, the group attended the GSDM Alumni Reception at the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) 103rd Annual Meeting that was held on Sunday, September 10, 2017.
