ADA_scholarships-200The American Dental Association Foundation (ADAF) recently awarded scholarships to two Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine students. Benjamin Cooperman DMD 15 is 1 of 31 recipients of the Predoctoral Dental Student Scholarship for this academic year and Matthew Garcia DMD 15 is 1 of 19 to receive the Underrepresented Minority Dental Student Scholarship for 2012–13. Both awards are for $2,500.

The ADAF student scholarships are awarded to ease the burden of professional education expenses for academically gifted students.

On February 27, 2013, the students met with Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter, who said that “it is always great to see Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine students recognized.” Dean Hutter praised the students on their achievement and hard work. He also thanked Student Affairs Coordinator Amy Nelson for facilitating the process from start to completion. Assistant Dean of Students Dr. Joseph Calabrese and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Dr. Cataldo Leone were also present to congratulate Cooperman and Garcia.

Both Garcia and Cooperman expressed their appreciation for the support of the School. Cooperman stated, “I’m thankful for the faculty and administration at Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine for helping make this happen.”

Grand Rounds Provides an Answer: “What do you do if you don’t know what to do?”

grand_rounds-patrick_moore-200-v2On February 27, 2013, for the second in the series of Grand Rounds for the 2012–13 academic year, Patrick Moore DMD 13 presented a case that he took on during his 10-week externship rotation at Dental Health Works in Keene, New Hampshire. His preceptor was Dr. Stephen Hoffman.

Professor of General Dentistry Dr. Carl McManama opened Grand Rounds by saying that he wished that the sessions occurred every week rather than a few times a year. Introduced by Dr. McManama, Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter added that “Grand Rounds is among the most important things we do here.”

Attending Grand Rounds and welcomed by Dean Hutter were four students from the University of Hong Kong Prince Philip Dental Hospital—Carrie Kar Wing Tse, Michelle Yu, Law Shuet Wah, and So Stephanie Yuen Ting—who are spending two weeks at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine to observe how the School delivers its dental education.

Moore began his Grand Rounds presentation by describing a patient that presented unique treatment challenges. His patient was a 51-year-old man with Down Syndrome whose mother was his lifelong caretaker. At the first visit to the office, the patient’s mother said, “We would like to get [patient name] some teeth.” The patient had had the remainder of his teeth extracted about five months before the visit. He presented with a small maxilla that had  a shallow vault, a large tongue, and palatal asymmetry. He was born with a heart defect that was repaired in infancy and also has Type 1 Diabetes. He has a history of periodontal disease, un-erupted teeth, and severe caries.

Moore was faced with many questions and few straightforward answers. Will simply being in a dental chair pose a risk to the patient? Will he be able to tolerate the time in the chair? What implications do the patient’s conditions have for premedication? Will the patient be able to tolerate the dentures, whether fixed or removable? What about upkeep? What kind of challenges will the differences in muscle posture, bone shape, and tongue size present for implant fitting and cast making?

A textbook would not provide much help in determining a treatment plan for this special needs patient.

As Dr. McManama remarked after Moore’s presentation, Patrick followed a sound piece of wisdom by asking: “’What do you do if you don’t know what to do?’ The answer: ‘Ask someone smarter than you.’” Thus, to come up with a sensible treatment plan, Moore sought the experts and sources of research that would provide insight into the case.

The treatment plan that Moore ultimately established was comprised of multiple phases. The phases were organized so that after the completion of each, the treatment could be suspended if it became too challenging for the patient.

The cast-making for the lower denture presented significant difficulties. Over the process, Moore was forced to abandon a number of endeavors. He was never deterred in his efforts, however. After an attempt to solve the problem by putting together the lower cast from two pieces failed, he achieved success by working with a 3D printer.

Moore then talked about a “learning moment”: As he recounted the instant of “aha,” the dentures were ordered, he was lying in bed in Keene, New Hampshire, when he realized that the asymmetry in the patient’s mouth could be an underlying tooth! He had made the connection between the lesion that recently appeared on the asymmetry and a recently seen patient with an impacted canine erupting under her complete denture.

Indeed, his suspicions were confirmed. Though this posed further challenges, a lesson was learned, the problem was resolved by relieving the denture in that area, and the denture fitting finally took place. The upper denture was a success. Unfortunately, due to the large size of the patient’s tongue coupled with his narrow palate, the lower denture was not well tolerated.

As Moore tells it, at the end of every session with this patient, the patient would pop up from the chair, go straight to the mirror, and smile—hoping to see teeth. Imagine the satisfaction, then, when he went to the mirror and saw a toothy smile. Though the result of Moore’s efforts did not necessarily provide a functional improvement, the aesthetic and emotional improvement is real.

When Moore finished his presentation, Dr. McManama commended him for his work with this exceptional case that presented so many unique challenges. He then opened the floor for discussion. There was a lively debate that included the future role of 3D printing in dentistry, possible alternatives to the treatment plan chosen by Moore, and the presence of a huge underserved population of people with special needs.

Moore had the following to say of his experience with this patient:

While there were a lot of challenges and a few brief moments of frustration, I would say that the dominant emotion while working on this patient was a whole lot of fun. The chance to do something a little out of the normal grind, to work hard, be creative, and think outside the box while providing a service to someone was a real privilege. I really have to thank my preceptor for giving me the autonomy to try something different, and for providing insight and guidance along the way.

While Moore conveyed insights in a number of specific areas of treatment, the overarching message from this Grand Rounds comes in the form of a reminder: While dental professionals may swiftly and easily decipher common problems in their day-to-day practice, there will always remain unique cases that will require intense research, continued education, and persistence.

GSDM attendees were: Sammy Gill DMD 14, Antonio Maceda-Johnson DMD 15, Jessica Metcalfe DMD 15, Zara Nensey DMD 14, Khamir Patel AS 14, and Jay Patel DMD 14.

Jenny Lorenzo DMD 13 and Fransheska Ovalles DMD 13, Chair and Vice Chair, respectively, of the Community Outreach Committee of GSDM’s ASDA chapter—with assistance from Oral Health Promotion Director Kathy Lituri and Assistant Director of Student Affairs Erica Manczuk—applied for the Crest Oral B/ASDA Community Dentistry Award on behalf of the School. GSDM won third place, a result of its chapter’s efforts serving local communities by providing stellar dental care and education.

Sammy Gill was elected District 1 Trustee, a unique and significant honor. Gill will represent all District 1 dental schools (GSDM, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine) and serve on the ASDA Board of Trustees. District trustees guide chapters in their district and act as the official liaison between the local chapters and national ASDA.

“ASDA is an organization that 17,000 dental students belong to and represents 88 percent of dental students. We have two recognized delegates at the house floor at ADA and have a unique relationship with ADEA,” said Gill. “I’m honored to serve on the Board of Trustees this year and could not have done it without the support of friends at all four schools in District 1.”

Khamir Patel introduced a resolution in the House of Delegates to create a list serve of Advanced Standing students across the country. Patel and the other GSDM students were ecstatic when the resolution passed.

Patel said, “It was a great opportunity to be a part of the whole decision making process. I hope my resolution will be a stepping stone for more involvement of advanced standing students in ASDA.”

Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter praised the students for the honors they received at the ASDA Annual Session. “Congratulations to the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine’s ASDA chapter for its wonderful achievements at this year’s Annual Session,” said Dean Hutter. “Your commitment to excellence in dental care, service to local communities, and leadership skills are essential and inspirational.”

ADEA-200Several members of the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine’s (GSDM) community attended the 2013 American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Annual Session & Exhibition, March 16-19 in Seattle, Washington. The theme of this year’s Annual Session was “Landscape of Learning.” The theme encompassed key issues and future-oriented concepts in dental education. Educational sessions focused on: curricular change with a focus on interprofessional education, various pedagogical approaches especially related to learning how to teach to inspire and motivate students as learners and future professionals, and methods of effective reflection and positive self-assessment.

Associate Professor in the Department of General Dentistry Paul Farsai and Catherine Sarkis, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Policy & Health Services Research, Assistant Dean for Admissions, lead the session, “Background Checks and Screenings in Dental Education: Establishing Professional Standards.” The presentation included a continuum of information about ethical behavior and conduct of undergraduate pre-dental students, to dental school applicants, to matriculating and continuing dental students, to licensed professionals. A rubric was presented as a tool to make determinations regarding professional standards. Ms. Sarkis received the ADEA Council of Sections Award.

“I was grateful to ADEA for the Council of Sections award and to the distinguished panel of speakers for their participation and for the important information they provided,” said Catherine Sarkis. “Arguably the reputation and future of the profession depends not only on the knowledge and skills of its members, but also on the values and conduct of its members.”

Kathleen Held, Assistant Professor in the Department of General Dentistry, Assistant Director of the Office of Extramural Programs and Ana Zea, Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of General Dentistry, presented a lecture entitled, “’GLOBAL’: What’s in it for your school, students and communities?” The presentation identified benefits and challenges in the creation of a global health program, discussed important considerations for the planning and implementation of global missions, and reviewed evaluation strategies for key stakeholders.

“It was our goal when presenting at the ADEA conference to highlight GSDM’s programs aimed at addressing global oral health disparities,” said Kathleen Held. “By taking the lead we hoped to provide tools to other dental academic institutions also committed to fostering an understanding and helping disadvantaged populations both domestically and abroad. We look forward to working with the other dental schools who participated in the session and supporting their global initiatives in the future.”

All four GSDM representatives for the ADEA Council of Students, Residents and Fellows (CoSRF), Arsalan Elahi DMD 14, Kelsey Hill DMD 14, Emma Lattouf DMD 15, and Andrew Soule-Hines DMD 15 attended education sessions with other dental school CoSRF representatives. Lattouf and Soule-Hines are new CoSRF representatives and this was their first ADEA Annual Session.

“I had a great time. I learned about the structure of the ADEA, had a chance to try some of the newest preclinical teaching systems, and perhaps most importantly, spoke with other students about their experiences in dental school,” said Andrew Soule-Hines. “It can be difficult to gain perspective on what other dental schools are like but the annual session allowed us to do just that.”

Emma Lattouf added, “I’m looking forward to sharing this new knowledge with our classmates and hope to work more closely with the faculty to better our school and dental education.”

A fifth student, Marc Horton DMD 14, attended the Annual Session as a participant in the 2013 ADEAGies/AADR Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program (ADCFP).

“I am so proud of the faculty, staff, and students from the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine who attended and participated in the ADEA Annual Session,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. “You are exemplary representatives of our School.”

GSDM also hosted an alumni reception at the Columbia Tower Club. Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter, Stacey McNamee, Director of Alumni Relations & Annual Giving, and GSDM Annual Session attendees greeted and mingled with local alumni.

“It was a wonderful evening,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. “The faculty, staff and students from the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine enjoyed having an opportunity to meet with our distinguished alumni from the Seattle area.”

Debate Team Luncheon-200On Wednesday, April 10, 2013, Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter hosted a luncheon honoring Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine’s (GSDM) 2013 American Student Dental Association (ASDA) debate team.

The team competed in the Second Annual ASDA District 1 Debate on Saturday, February 23, 2013. The GSDM team competed against their counterparts at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM). Due to inclement weather, the team from University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine (the fourth District 1 School) could not attend. The Debate was held at TUSDM.

The participating team members were: James Lee DMD 14, Michael Mayr DMD 16, Darshit Shah AS 13, and Wyatt Traina DMD 14.

Marc Horton DMD 14 and Rachel Lukas DMD 13 organized the event with assistance from ASDA Executive Committee members Danielle Berkowitz DMD 13, Danielle Fernandez DMD 14, and Sammy Gill DMD 14. They worked in conjunction with students from HSDM and TUSDM, as well as the Boston Collaborative Group and the Massachusetts Dental Society.

TUSDM won the debate, but the GSDM team members’ efforts were exceptional and made for an exciting series of debates.

The debate topics were:

  • Should non-dentists be permitted to perform teeth whitening procedures?
  • With the increase in large dental practices, should there be more ADA oversight to protect patients?
  • Is it ethical for dental mission trips to practice a different standard of care than that which we practice in the U.S.?
  • Is it ethical for dentists to offer Groupon/LivingSocial deals?
  • Should there be incentive programs offered to encourage students to enter academia upon graduation?
  • Should dental anesthesiology be an ADA-recognized specialty?
  • Do mid-level providers serve to increase accessibility to dental care in neglected communities or do they compromise the overall quality of care administered?
  • As educational institutions, do dental schools have a responsibility to their students to keep tuition reasonably affordable?
  • Is there a place for a naturopathic-based approach to dentistry in the current healthcare system?

“These debates are important because they shine a spotlight on the hot issues of dentistry,” said Wyatt Traina.

Dr. George Keleher, clinical associate professor of General Dentistry, served as a Debate judge and Assistant Dean of Students Dr. Joseph Calabrese was among the spectators cheering on the team.

Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter recognized the team’s performance at the Debate. “Congratulations to our ASDA debate team,” said Dean Hutter. “Your knowledge and skills were truly inspiring and you made our School proud.”

OCRI-200Oral cancer kills approximately 5,700 people in the US and affects more than 640,000 worldwide each year. Despite progress in diagnosis and treatment, the 5-year survival rate has held still at 50 to 60 percent for the past 20 years.

As we observe Oral Cancer Awareness Month in April, the Boston University Oral Cancer Research Initiative (OCRI) works to bring together clinicians along with researchers from diverse disciplines to understand, prevent, treat, and cure oral cancer. The Initiative, located here at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM), brings together scientists conducting fundamental research, clinical researchers advancing new forms of treatment, and public health professionals helping to understand and apply new discoveries.

“Our multidisciplinary approach will facilitate the translation of research findings into improved outcomes for patients,” says GSDM Associate Dean for Research Maria Kukuruzinska.

The OCRI includes participants from the BU School of Medicine, School of Public Health, and the College of Engineering, in addition to GSDM. The Initiative recently added researchers and clinicians from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute who are also working on head & neck cancer.

updates_in_dental_medicine-200On April 5, 2013, faculty and students gathered at the Boston Common Hotel and Conference Center for the second annual “Updates in Dental Medicine.” The “Updates” are part of a continuing faculty development series designed to meet the self-assessed needs of the Faculty. “Dr. Neal Fleisher and I worked closely with the GSDM Faculty Development Task Force and the ADEA Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL) in structuring the series” said Dr. Judith Jones, co-Chair of the Task force on Faculty Development.

In the morning, Dr. Clyde Evans of CE Consulting led the group in a team building interactive workshop. Dr. Paula O’Neill—professor of Diagnostic Sciences and Associate Dean for Educational Research and Professional Development at University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Dentistry—led the group in a conflict management and case-based conflict resolution workshop in the afternoon.

Dr. Evans outlined fundamental principles and attributes of high performing teams along with the roles and responsibilities of team members. The faculty and students worked in small groups to experience and practice the principles and dynamics of teambuilding.

Dr. O’Neill discussed the situation of conflict and related behaviors, feelings, and consequences and outlined strategies for considering the viewpoint of others in a conflict. She also discussed conflict resolution tactics between individuals, small groups, and organizations, and looked at personal preferences toward conflict management as indicated by the Thomas Kilman Instrument (TKI).

Attendees of the workshops engaged in lively discussion and debate on the topics at hand in a constructive day of collaboration.

Director of Group Practice and Clinical Associate Professor of General Dentistry Dr. David Russell said:

At its very heart, the individual practices, in the upcoming pre-doctoral group practice model, are a team of individuals united to care for an individual patient. The team of care givers are general dentists, specialists, teachers, students, and supporting staff that form a dynamic group dedicated to their common interest, the patient. The recent workshop on April 5, in a most timely way, helped us to understand the fundamental principles and attributes of high performing teams. Additionally, in any diverse team, such as a group dental practice, there is bound to be differences of opinion and even conflict. The conflict management portion of the workshop discussed important strategies to recognize and consider another person’s viewpoint. We will benefit from both programs as we embark on this new and exciting project.

Said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter, “These workshops are an excellent step forward in our progress toward fulfilling Goal 8 of our Applied Strategic Plan: ‘Recruit and retain an excellent and diverse faculty and staff.’ I am pleased to witness such an engaged gathering of Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine faculty and students.”

Decisive Soccer Championship Win for GSDM Mandiballers

The Mandiballers

The Mandiballers

A victory four years in the works, the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) soccer team, the Mandiballers, won the Spring 2013 BU Intramural Men’s Indoor Soccer Championship in a decisive 4-0 victory over the Phohang Red Catatadiamonds on April 7.

The Mandiballers was formed as a team four years ago by a core group of DMD 13s. Patrick Moore designed their logo, the team members made some uniforms, and the Mandiballers have been playing ever since. While they have been successful overall, they have lost in the semi-finals or championships in all previous years. Winning the Championship in the core group’s final year is, thus, a special triumph.

The current Mandiballers are (photo: top row, left to right) Blake Rogers DMD 13, Erik Engelbrekston DMD 13, Thomas Hernon DMD 13, Eamon Chory DMD 15, Colin Brady DMD 13 (Coach/Captain), Greg Hein DMD 14, Ben Irzyk DMD 14, (photo: bottom row, left-to-right) John Greiner DMD 13, Joe Bousaba DMD 13, Chris Bickford DMD 13, Chris Connell DMD 15, Aadil Shamji DMD 13, and Patrick Moore DMD 13.

The goals in the final were scored by Ben Irzyk, Spencer Holland (BU Law), John Greiner, and Erik Engelbrekston. Team coach and captain Colin Brady reports that “defense was held down all season by a three man rotation of Pat Moore, Aadil Shamji, and Eamon Chory” and that “goal keeping was performed by Chris Bickford.” According to Brady, Bickford has “been incredible all four seasons.”

Brady believes that the addition of the DMD 15s (Chris Connell and Eamon Chory) was what gave the Mandiballers “the extra edge to get over the championship hump.”

Mandiballers captain Brady offers many positive words about his team: “It was just a great group of guys that really developed into a tremendous team both on and off the field. It was really nice to see a group that was so passionate about reaching a goal finally conquering it…even if it was just an intramural soccer championship. We’re hoping the tradition continues next year, as Irzyk will be taking over the reins as captain.”

Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter said, “Congratulations to the Mandiballers on their championship win. I commend them on their perseverance, team spirit, and hard work. All of these qualities are valued at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine.”

DDS Commissioner Elin Howe, Dr. Perlman, and President and CEO of Cardinal Cushing Centers Jo Ann Simon, who nominated Dr. Perlman for the award

Dr. Steve Perlman PEDO 76 was awarded the 2013 Allen Crocker, MD Health Services Award at the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) and the DDS Statewide Advisory Council Annual State House Celebration.  The award is presented annually to an individual or organization that mirrors the life of Dr. Crocker and his respect for and value of individuals with a disability.

In a career that spanned more than six decades, Dr. Crocker, a Harvard Medical School pediatrician, re-conceptualized the doctor/family dialogue regarding family life with a child with Down Syndrome.  He mentored scores of physicians and impacted the education of generations of pediatricians and other professionals through the publication of definitive medical textbooks on caring for individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities.

In presenting the award, DDS Commissioner Elin Howe said, “Dr. Perlman personifies the exceptional qualities of the individual in whose name this award is given – that is a passion for offering quality care, a deep and abiding belief in the value of every individual with a disability, and an unconditional commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals with intellectual disability.”

In accepting the award, Dr. Perlman told the audience of legislators, policy-makers, and disability advocates, “Let us continue to fight to end the disparities in health care for persons with intellectual disabilities, their difficulties in accessing care, the lack of education of health care providers and the end of the use of the “R” word. To quote Dr. Crocker’s favorite quote, “I hope to leave the campsite better than when I found it.”

Congratulations to Dr. Perlman,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. “This is indeed an honor for him to be recognized by the DDS with such a prestigious award.  Dr. Perlman continues to bring great pride to his alma mater.”

On Thursday, May 2, 2013, the Boston University School of Public Health sponsored a “Finish the Race” walk.  “Finish the Race” was developed as a tribute to the affected runners and spectators, and an expression of solidarity with everyone in Boston and neighboring communities who are working to move forward, past the horrific events during and after the Boston Marathon.

The event was a one-mile walk that began on the Talbot Green on the Medical Campus.  The first 300 participants received a “Finish the Race” t-shirt, which were worn as a sign of solidarity. At the finish line, participants had the opportunity to sign a greeting card for BMC patients still recovering from injuries suffered at the marathon.

“It was very gratifying to see many of our Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) faculty, staff, and students participating in this important event,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter.  He continued, “As an active member of our community, GSDM stands ready to help our neighbors in any way we can as our city continues to cope with the impact of these tragic events.”
